The Maneki Neko comes from a Japanese tale of a cat that waved a passing lord out of the path of a lightning strike, and it has been kept ever since as a sign of good luck and welcome. A raised left paw is said to call in people, a raised right paw to call in money. It is a warm, familiar guardian for a shop counter, an entryway, or a desk.
